Serving at Home

Serving is about identifying needs of others and responding from the heart. Blessing others by helping them can be one of the most rewarding things you do for them and for yourself.

Being able to help and serve each other in our homes creates unity and helps when we reach out to serve others outside of our family comfort zone.

Through Christ, we are given grace and gifts “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” Ephesians 4:12. What better place to start then in our own lives, families and homes?

Parents

– Build a family of Faith, Hope and Love
* Put notes of encouragement where your children will find them
* Thank and praise children when they help (even if it wasn’t done the way you like)
* Remember children are practicing to be big people and they will mess up sometimes
* Ask for help when you need it, don’t just expect it
* Act the way you want your children to act
* Love at all times
* Be an example of serving others by letting your children see you serving those in need
Children

– Make life easier for the grownups in your life
* Be kind to others
* Treat others the way you want to be treated
* Clean up your room without being asked
* Help cook and clean up dinner
* Help take care of pets
* Do your homework and keep grades up
* Make your bed
* Get along with your brothers or sisters
* Accept when you’ve been told ‘no’
* Always be open and honest about stuff that happens
* Write a note to your brother/sister thanking them for something nice they did for you
* Put a note where your parents will find it, telling them what they mean to you
Everyone

– See a need and respond
* Put someone’s shopping cart away
* Be considerate to others in rush hour traffic
* Help someone in need – secretly buy them groceries
* Rake neighbors leaves
* Taking people to doctor or other appointments
* Offer to babysit so other parents can go out
* Do housework and cleaning for someone in need
* Visit people in Retirement and Nursing homes
* Welcome new people to the neighborhood
* Invite someone you know to a church event
* Be encouraging to the people in your life
* Be forgiving, compassionate, patient
Families

– Find ways to do things together
* While eating together, share a time where you saw a family member helping someone
* While playing cards or a board game share how it felt when someone helped you
* Pray together about things you face as a family
* Take a picture of your family helping someone else
* Have a family time each week to record in a journal, something that each family member did to help someone else
EVERYONE
Pray for one another

One of the best ways to serve others is to be in prayer for them and asking God to meet their needs. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them. When you are safe and happy, remember someone has prayed for you.

“Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.” Thess. 5:16-18

Praise builds faith, faith strengthens prayer, prayer answers all
